The saga of the Akademik Sholaskiy is a mere symptom of creative ways to waste money on immature, misguided self-aggrandizing adventure. Though as a PR stunt, skeptics could not possibly have come up with a better way to highlight the growing sea-ice around Antarctica that the models never predicted; nor to display the lack of pragmatic skill modern climate science has attained.

Given enough rope the poor intellectual standards, dismal ethics and lack of civic responsibility has inevitably exposed itself. But if the media had critiqued their irrational and self-serving behaviour over the last decade, a lot of public money could have been used on things that mattered.

It is a good development that sensible non-aligned commentators appreciate the enormous cost this ill-begotten mission is accruing. Perhaps they will be less likely to treat climate scientists as minor Gods in future.

One day, they might even ask them some tough questions.

I’m gonna give it to the looney tune Australian Professor Chris Turley [sic] who led the expedition to Antarctica to prove there is no sea ice, getting stuck in sea ice. He and his group of AGW true believers had to be evacuated from the ship they were on by helicopter. And then, true to form, he doubled down on his idiocy by saying the reason they got stuck in the sea ice, in the summer was because of global warming. Remember, to these booger eatin’ moh-rons global warming causes everything. Droughts? Global warming. Floods? Global warming. More storms? Global warming. Less storms? Global warming. The Chinese who rescued these assholes should send them a bill.

I’ll just give Professor Chris Turley [sic] the coveted AOTW Award.

On Jan 2 all 52 passengers of research vessel AKADEMIK SHOKALSKIY were evacuated to Australian research and supply icebreaker Aurora Australis by a Chinese helicopter provided research and supply icebreaker Xue Long. World media made such a fuss over the story one could think it was a Titanik tragedy turned into success. It was clear from actually, the very beginning, that the passengers were in no real danger, when it came out, that there are helicopters nearby. They’ve been taken from Shokalskiy simply because they were already more of a nuisance staying on board of Shokalskiy, and eating away food supplies which are required for the crew remaining on board. Passengers were mostly scientists, or so they say, who were trying to get yet more proofs of devastating global warming effects.

French polar chief derides Antarctic cruise as a jaunt

In an interview with AFP, Yves Frenot, director of the French Polar Institute, said he had no issue at all with rescuing those aboard the stricken vessel.
But, he said, the trip itself was a "pseudo-scientific expedition" that, because it had run into difficulties, had drained resources from the French, Chinese and Australian scientific missions in Antarctica. "There's no reason to place Antarctica off-limits and to keep it just for scientists, but this tourism has to be monitored and regulated so that operators can be sure of getting help if need be," he said.

The purpose of the AAE expedition was to take a science team of 36 women and men south to discover just how much change has taken place at Mawson Station over 100 years. The expedition was also intended to replicate the original AAE led by explorer Sir Douglas Mawson a century ago, in 1913. The new expedition was to be led by Prof. Chris Turney, a publicity-hungry professor of climate change at Australia’s University of New South Wales.
