Ms Gillard sat and watched as Craig Thomson spoke to the House of Representatives for one hour carried live on television.   She watched as Mr Thomson used the Parliament's time, the nation's time and a good deal of the parliament's standing to suggest that a union organiser Marco Bolano had set him up with "hookers" to ruin his political career.

Children watched this happen.   Aspiring leaders saw the result of toughing it out.  Many foolish commentators called the behaviours tough, bulletproof, gutsy.

But that's not what it was.  It was tawdry and cheap and beneath the dignity and privilege of the Parliament.

Like the Coat of Arms atop the Parliament House building, the virtues found in our character will endure.  They might be temporarily usurped by people of bad character, but like Gillard's government, that can only ever be temporary.

Today I hope we remember the lies, the bad behaviour, the coverups, the corruption.   Today I hope we mark a conscious decision to reassert our values, to reassert the privilege and responsibilities of the parliament and the people it represents.

It would be wrong simply to forget, to say it belongs to the past, to let it go.  Justice must be done and manifestly seen to be done.

I wish Tony Abbott and his ministry well.  While he might find it personally distasteful, he must make certain we don't forget what his predecessors did.   Or the consequences that should be coming their way.

  invests  any proceeds derived from that conduct, or any proceeds derived
  from the investment or use of those proceeds, in an enterprise.
    2. For purposes of this section, a person participates in a pattern of
  criminal activity when, with intent to participate  in  or  advance  the
  affairs  of the criminal enterprise, he engages in conduct constituting,
  or, is criminally liable for pursuant to section 20.00 of this  chapter,
  at  least  three  of the criminal acts included in the pattern, provided
  that:
    (a) Two of his acts are felonies other than conspiracy;
    (b) Two of his acts, one of which is a felony,  occurred  within  five
  years of the commencement of the criminal action; and
    (c) Each of his acts occurred within three years of a prior act.
    3. For purposes of this section, the enterprise corrupted in violation
  of  subdivision  one of this section need not be the criminal enterprise
  by which the person is employed or with which he is associated, and  may
  be a legitimate enterprise.

 Enterprise corruption is a class B felony.

CRAIG THOMSON'S CLAIMS AGAINST ME ARE FALSE

 

I do not intend to dignify Mr. Thomson’s fantastic and dishonest claims with a

detailed response.

 To do so would only serve to provoke further absurdity.Any suggestion that I conspired to "set up" Mr. Thomson, as he has claimed frombehind the protection of parliamentary privilege, is utterly false and an abuse of his   parliamentary     privileges.I note that only last week the Victoria Police - who are investigating Mr. Thomson'smisuse of members' money when he was National Secretary of the HSU -announced that Mr. Thomson has declined to identify to them the people who henow claims set him up.  

That is, Mr. Thomson is prepared to smear me and othersfrom the Parliament but not prepared to give that same information to the very policewho are investigating the offences for which he now claims he was set up. 

Mr. Thomson's abuse of parliamentary privilege is manifest and the Parliamentshould take responsibility for dealing with such an abuse by one of its own.I sincerely hope Mr. Thomson one day takes responsibility for his own actions. Thathe considers the impact of his choices, particularly the impact on the Health  Services Union, its members and the individuals who have shone the light on corruption bysome in our union.It disturbs me to watch Mr. Thomson drowning in a river of delusion.  

For the sake of his wife and family I hope that Mr. Thomson one day grasps a branch of reality, rather than be swept away. Only then may he hopefully find some redemption andstart to move on with his life.Marco Bolano
