Jeffrey L. Bewkes
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Time Warner Inc.
I am Joanne Siegel widow of Jerry Siegel, creator of Superboy and co-creator of Superman with Joe Shuster. It has always been my policy to be in touch with the Chairmen of the Board of your company going back to when Steve Ross formed Warner Communications.
Steve Ross knew how to take care of large vexing problems. He paid the price, whatever it was, then went on, and the company prospered. He was gracious and friendly when my late husband Jerry and I met him at a stockholders meeting after he sent Jerry, Joe, my daughter Laura and me company stock. He also phoned me to say if we needed anything I should just pick up the phone and call him. He said if he could not be reached for some reason, one of the top officers in the company, Deane Johnson, would handle things personally. Laura and I believe if Steve were alive our copyright ownership matter would have been successfully resolved long ago.
Jerry Levin was also reachable and thoughtful. He sent my husband and later me, cases of grapefruit at the holiday season. He remembered Jerry’s birthday with a Superman sculpture. When my Jerry passed away, Jerry Levin told Laura and me that we are part of the Time Warner family, part of its history. Unfortunately he retired before our rights issues were resolved. He had given his attorneys too much power so that negotiations were unsatisfactory and a settlement was impossible. Dick Parsons, on the other hand, was not friendly and, under him, the attorneys hired by the company were arrogant and pro-litigation.
Now you are Chairman and CEO. Because we are in litigation I held off writing to you. I now believe had we had contact early on, things might not have gone so far off track.
My daughter Laura and I, as well as the Shuster estate, have done nothing more than exercise our rights under the Copyright Act. Yet, your company has chosen to sue us and our long-time attorney for protecting our rights.
On December 1st I turned 93. I am old enough to be your mother. I have grown grandchildren. Unfortunately I am not in the best of health. My cardiologist provided a letter to your attorneys informing them that I suffer from a serious heart condition and that forcing me to go through yet another stressful deposition could put me in danger of a heart attack or stroke. I am also on medications that have side effects which force me to stay close to home and restrooms. Nonetheless your attorneys are forcing me to endure a second deposition even though I have already undergone a deposition for a full day in this matter. As clearly they would be covering the same ground, their intention is to harass me.
My dear daughter Laura too has painful medical conditions including multiple sclerosis, arthritis, glaucoma, spine disorders, and fibromyalgia. She has already had her deposition taken twice by your attorneys while in pain. Her doctors have given written statements saying she should not be subjected to a third deposition, yet your attorneys are insisting on re-taking her deposition in an effort to harass her as well.
So I ask you to please consider – do these mean spirited tactics meet with your approval? Do you really think the families of Superman’s creators should be treated this way?
As you know, DC and Warner Bros. have profited enormously from 72 years of exploiting Jerry and Joe’s wonderful creation. Superman is now a billion dollar franchise and has been DC’s flagship property for all this time.
As for this letter, the purpose is three-fold:
To protest harassment of us that will gain you nothing but bad blood and a continued fight.
To protest harassment of our attorney by falsely accusing him of improper conduct in an attempt to deprive us of legal counsel.
To make you aware that in reality this is a business matter and that continuing with litigation for many more years will only benefit your attorneys.
This is not just another case. The public and press are interested in Superman and us and are aware of our and your litigations.
The solution to saving time, trouble, and expense is a change of viewpoint. Laura and I are legally owed our share of Superman profits since 1999. By paying the owed bill in full, as you pay other business bills, it would be handled as a business matter, instead of a lawsuit going into its 5th year.
Even though you will no doubt pass this letter on to your attorneys, the final decision is yours. Your image as well as the company’s reputation rests on a respectable and acceptable outcome, and I hope you will get personally involved to insure this matter is handled properly.
The courtesy of a friendly and meaningful reply from you will be most appreciated.

Internet's finally changing for the better. Obiter dicta in this case indicates hate sites and other BPD defamation sites can expect storms ahead. Excellent.
No guide stood on some shadowy landing to explain or illuminate. No map showed ways below and the tunnels from the Torrens River and Parliament House. Does anyone think those mouldering tunnels exist any less for escaping the attentions of cartographers and town planners? Or did they escape the town planners, the engineers? Surface men constructed the Escalator; they had help from pale hands not often seen Above, to be sure, but it was Surface-dwellers who worked to reclaim the ancient tunnels.
They put them to the use that the children who walk the surface always put the old things to; they incorporate them into their games. The game of smuggling; the game of ritual murder; the game of dabbling with the crafts of their elders.
The Escalator was as brutal to the senses as the discovery of a murdered child's skeleton in the Bush; as provocative as the pyramids of Central Australia, far from the calculated disbelief of governments and the hostility of the less recent immigrants, the so-called Aborigines. Ironic, the chalk-white men who taught fear to the black hunter gatherers, thus preparing the way for two centuries of ignorance a long time after, hiding in plain sight as stories and legends.
I was at the flat of a close friend. He and I had, as usual with us, teamstered our way through a gauntlet of sterile parties and bars, embraced by the unloving drizzle of an undecided June night each time we rang the changes at a social event and made tracks for the next.
Eventually we arrived at my friend's flat, with ten or so other slightly less close friends in tow; I had my girlfriend with me, my friend immunised himself against the chill of the night in other ways.
That flat was art made real. One wall was dominated by the Egyptian Book of the Dead prayer number 121 blazoned across the features in gold, cobalt blue and black poster paint. That prayer was a feature of any place my friend stayed. It made him feel safe. Once, he had explained the weird compulsion to paint it to me,
"In some future time when you're a big deal asshole in the Law world and I'm still chasing after Wilderness chicks, what if I become an asshole too? I might forget the prayer or fuck with it instead of respecting it. This way, it's painted for good right on my bloody wall - if I do asshole my soul, I won't have the energy to chisel it off."
"Wouldn't you just move, Peter?"
"Thanks a lot for pissing on my parade."
Pete had a talent for attracting people who were Bohemian only in the kindest use of that term. We both knew that the majority of the paranormal was a fact of life, and loved to collect living technicolour examples of manifested world weirdness. We interviewed these spiralling souls and tried to touch them to see if their otherness was still wet.
Well, that drizzling dark night, we had an all-time classic poured right over our heads.

Affirmative action for a lazy, undisciplined and far from gifted foreign student.
Monday, March 21, 2011
The book has short chapters, typical of the length in our post-literate society. Much of the book reads like longer versions of Cashill's online essays, so if you like them, you'll like this. I do happen to like his essays so the book being essentially a sequential succession of same made it a pleasurable experience for me.
The author injects some autobiography into the work in tolerable small snippets, but the crux of the reading experience, and the only reason anyone outside WND or American Thinker might buy this tome is the approach, both scholarly and reputable, to the real issues of Obama's true identity, the identity of the person who obviously ghost-wrote his "autobiographies", and the exposure of the constant venal lying behaviour of Obama from his earliest truly recorded history to the present.
In the process we are set with the task of curing whatever cognitive dissonance we may be suffering- and even stern critics of Obama are victims of the omnipresent media hypnosis. Looked at plainly, Obama is truly an empty suit, elevated through race politics and used as a tool by many unscrupulous and frankly evil individuals for their own ends. Obama emerges as a figure distinctly like Hitler- a Frankenstein monster who outpaces the destructive impulses of his equally self-mythologising step-parents like Bill Ayers and Jeremiah Wright. What is vastly more disturbing is Obama's funding by Saudi Arabia, his apparent flirtation with homosexuality - something that is part of a clear pattern of leftist behaviour in the profile of many narcissists - and his deep and abiding love for himself. His creepy dedication to personal power and unerring ability to pick the hardline communist in the room to be his mentor at any given point in his history emerge fairly gently in Cashill's book, which summarises the Obama false personality and his predictable path to power whilst also setting out the fatally deep and incurable corruption of the mainstream media, and its enabler, the pervasive white guilt that generations of socialist infiltrators like the post-terrorist Weathermen have created.
I don't see any way that the substance of Cashill's book can be refuted, so I expect instead it will be ignored by the talking puppets of the media. To confront any part of it would be to destroy Obama's credibility even with most of his supporters.
One important point made in passing in this impressive and excellent book is that Clinton, and Obama, both enjoy unprecedented and unthinking support from Black Americans. This peculiarly black disgrace of ignoring all faults in their chosen idols makes any racial group easy pickings. That is also incontrivertible and should provide food for thought for Black Americans- why are 99% of their leaders nothing more than shills or race hucksters? Why isn't the black consciousness movement independent of stalinists, FBI informants and woowoo theorists?
Read this book. It is well worth it.

However, Gerber's pacificism tendencies were balanced by the need as he saw it to fight for principles- in his own life during his battle with Marvel, and in his fictional creations who not only had to undergo formulaic battles but also had some violent confrontations forced upon them.
Hence all of those awful, awful Obama covers and stories. Cringe inducing stuff to any normal soul.
Jack Kirby's run on Captain America during the bicentennial is hallucinatory, absurd- and yet can not fail to be deeply true to the character. After all Kirby (and Simon) created the character. Captain America now is a shadow puppet, his once permanently dead kid sidekick returned from the dead for cheap and extremely clumsy storytelling- turns out he was a soviet agent then in hiding and... whatever.
Bringing back Bucky robbed Captain America of more of his historicity than any sliding time scale ever did. It invalidated the message of sacrifice, and it makes those early stories written by Lee a nonsense. This is the curse of the revolving door of death.
It also makes the living symbol of America at her most heroic in war a mockery.
Once again the movie will no doubt be far truer to the original in continuity stories from 1961-1974 than any amount of the current low-selling pamphlets ever will.

Speaking as someone quite capable of drawing, I will explain.
The point is, in the "higher entelechy" where the original writer resides, he's having every imaginable difficulty with his collaborators, editor and publisher. He is in fact on the verge of quitting over artistic differences with them. As a consequence, deadlines were missed and the whole comic he was working on- his within-universe of J.T. Neslo- is a mess. Guest artists drawing in the house style plough on until the conflict suffered by the writer is resolved. Then, in the tail end of Book 1, things settle down to the "standard" style- what we are calling Saturday Morning Cartoons For Adults. By using the term "Adults" we don't intend to imply the books are scatalogical or pornographic- they are not even as confronting as say Jaws 2- but rather that we're trying to get the sense of wonder back in comics- four-color epics, blazing color, hot topical stories or cosmic sentiments, basically what we felt was missing from the big publishers.
JT Neslo is an ongoing series of graphic novels- sort of like full-color manga in the sense that they are big books. We want you to get value for money.
Forty pages are provided as a preview at SmackJeeves- just click on the cover illustration to the right to go there.
Above is a banner advert for the first edition - AUD$39.95, including postage anywhere on Earth, and the book will be signed by the author/artist. Should this book ever become collectible- your signed one will be that little bit more collectable. Collectible. Whatever.

Ann Coulter publicizes radiation hormesis!
With the terrible earthquake and resulting tsunami that have devastated Japan, the only good news is that anyone exposed to excess radiation from the nuclear power plants is now probably much less likely to get cancer.
This only seems counterintuitive because of media hysteria for the past 20 years trying to convince Americans that radiation at any dose is bad. There is, however, burgeoning evidence that excess radiation operates as a sort of cancer vaccine.
As The New York Times science section reported in 2001, an increasing number of scientists believe that at some level -- much higher than the minimums set by the U.S. government -- radiation is good for you. "They theorize," the Times said, that "these doses protect against cancer by activating cells' natural defense mechanisms."
Among the studies mentioned by the Times was one in Canada finding that tuberculosis patients subjected to multiple chest X-rays had much lower rates of breast cancer than the general population.
And there are lots more! A $10 million Department of Energy study from 1991 examined 10 years of epidemiological research by the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health on 700,000 shipyard workers, some of whom had been exposed to 10 times more radiation than the others from their work on the ships' nuclear reactors. The workers exposed to excess radiation had a 24 percent lower death rate and a 25 percent lower cancer mortality than the non-irradiated workers.
Isn't that just incredible? I mean, that the Department of Energy spent $10 million doing something useful? Amazing, right?
In 1983, a series of apartment buildings in Taiwan were accidentally constructed with massive amounts of cobalt 60, a radioactive substance. After 16 years, the buildings' 10,000 occupants developed only five cases of cancer. The cancer rate for the same age group in the general Taiwanese population over that time period predicted 170 cancers.
The people in those buildings had been exposed to radiation nearly five times the maximum "safe" level according to the U.S. government. But they ended up with a cancer rate 96 percent lower than the general population.
Bernard L. Cohen, a physics professor at the University of Pittsburgh, compared radon exposure and lung cancer rates in 1,729 counties covering 90 percent of the U.S. population. His study in the 1990s found far fewer cases of lung cancer in those counties with the highest amounts of radon -- a correlation that could not be explained by smoking rates.
Tom Bethell, author of the "Politically Incorrect Guide to Science," has been writing for years about the beneficial effects of some radiation, or "hormesis." A few years ago, he reported on a group of scientists who concluded their conference on hormesis at the University of Massachusetts by repairing to a spa in Boulder, Mont., specifically in order to expose themselves to excess radiation.
At the Free Enterprise Radon Health Mine in Boulder, people pay $5 to descend 85 feet into an old mining pit to be irradiated with more than 400 times the EPA-recommended level of radon. In the summer, 50 people a day visit the mine hoping for relief from chronic pain and autoimmune disorders.
Amazingly, even the Soviet-engineered disaster at Chernobyl in 1986 can be directly blamed for the deaths of no more than the 31 people inside the plant who died in the explosion. Although news reports generally claimed a few thousand people died as a result of Chernobyl -- far fewer than the tens of thousands initially predicted -- that hasn't been confirmed by studies. Indeed, after endless investigations, including by the United Nations, Manhattan Project veteran Theodore Rockwell summarized the reports to Bethell in 2002, saying, "They have not yet reported any deaths outside of the 30 who died in the plant."
Even the thyroid cancers in people who lived near the reactor were attributed to low iodine in the Russian diet -- and consequently had no effect on the cancer rate.
Meanwhile, the animals around the Chernobyl reactor, who were not evacuated, are "thriving," according to scientists quoted in the April 28, 2002 Sunday Times (UK).
Dr. Dade W. Moeller, a radiation expert and professor emeritus at Harvard, told The New York Times that it's been hard to find excess cancers even from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, particularly because one-third of the population will get cancer anyway. There were about 90,000 survivors of the atomic bombs in 1945 and, more than 50 years later, half of them were still alive. (Other scientists say there were 700 excess cancer deaths among the 90,000.)
Although it is hardly a settled scientific fact that excess radiation is a health benefit, there's certainly evidence that it decreases the risk of some cancers -- and there are plenty of scientists willing to say so. But Jenny McCarthy's vaccine theories get more press than Harvard physics professors' studies on the potential benefits of radiation. (And they say conservatives are anti-science!)
I guess good radiation stories are not as exciting as news anchors warning of mutant humans and scary nuclear power plants -- news anchors who, by the way, have injected small amounts of poison into their foreheads to stave off wrinkles. Which is to say: The general theory that small amounts of toxins can be healthy is widely accepted --except in the case of radiation.
Every day Americans pop multivitamins containing trace amount of zinc, magnesium, selenium, copper, manganese, chromium, molybdenum, nickel, boron -- all poisons.
They get flu shots. They'll drink copious amounts of coffee to ingest a poison: caffeine. (Back in the '70s, Professor Cohen offered to eat as much plutonium as Ralph Nader would eat caffeine -- an offer Nader never accepted.)
But in the case of radiation, the media have Americans convinced that the minutest amount is always deadly.
Although reporters love to issue sensationalized reports about the danger from Japan's nuclear reactors, remember that, so far, thousands have died only because of Mother Nature. And the survivors may outlive all of us over here in hermetically sealed, radiation-free America.

Don Cheadle is listed as playing War Machine, but it has been stated that Iron Man's best friend will not be present in the movie as Warmachine gets his own spinoff.
We do see Tom Hiddleston as Loki, who is said to use the Tesseract (Cosmic Cube) that appears in both Thor (see: Thor script spoilers) and Captain America: First Avenger.
It was surmised that Loki uses the Cube to call forth the aliens known as the Skrulls bringing them to Earth. However, as the sheet mentions the Kree, we see Earth gets involved in the middle of what is known as the Kree-Skrull War. Perhaps, Loki inadvertently summons both?
With the advent of the Kree, just who else will we see? Captain Marvel? As in the comics, could we see Mar-vell sent to Earth by the Kree as a scout - and then turn on his homeworld joining the Avengers? Could we see the Skrulls pretending to be humans? Or heroes?
From there, will this lead to involvement with the Inhumans (as we learned Marvel Studios is looking for a writer), the Guardians of the Galaxy and Doctor Strange - as Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has mentioned them, too?
Does all this sound a bit overwhelming as the cast is beginning to sound just huge for a two hour or three hour max movie?
Still, if done right - this could be, as filmmaker James Gunn put it, "by far the best script for a Marvel movie ever.”

Taken up all the weight on the front foot on the edge above the pipe
The other foot masonically right
Below the phthalo green of "water"
Busy with mosquito fish eating anything but
Another bureaucratic triumph
Victory declared despite the facts
Drowned at the water's edge
Along the horse manure bank with its holes
Five fingers erupting through the slime
Screwtape children worms
Pure nightmare fuel
Sprawled or crawling in the shattered sewer forgottens
And concrete ice sculptures
Slime velveteen nests unclean
Corusion carp intermittently
Perch the constant propaganda victims vomited into the open sewer ponds
In their millions to prove a pointless point
Whilst the mosquito fish happy breed
Penniless unless or until they evolve turbans or green sensibilities
Urambi hill provided an awe inspiring vista of shopping trolleys once
The new perspective is one of mole men concrete pipes
Daubed with the illiterate pictograms of the hopelessly unemployable
Underchimps of the NWO
Their uniform the ubiquitously banal
Steel tube rails here and there
More tank hazard than help for humans
Carcassed carp chewed by dog and fox
But no perch.

What is lacking is the original Marvel concept of a shared universe, changing and evolving. Better blogs than mine (see left bar - Wastebasket for example) set out the truth. From 1961 to 197x where x < 6 Marvel had a shared universe whose characters went through equivalent experiences to their readers, including college, birth, death and marriage - even tax problems, psychoanalysis and divorce etc.
The art back then ranged from superlative to quite crude - in fact Jack Kirby ran the entire spectrum embodied in one man - but the other driver was an inexhaustable font of ideas. Good ideas, terrible ideas, ideas spawned from current headlines - and lots and lots of conspiracy theory ideas. Take Marvel's two antithetical team books- the Avengers and Defenders. The Avengers had a published charter, a rich white guy's club (nicely skewered in its own pages too many times to count), government liaisons- and on top of all this, personal dramas, driven dark stories, villains more sympathetic than the heroes at times- a rich tapestry.
Then there's the famous non-team- The Defenders. Never equalled let alone bettered, Steve Gerber's run on the Defenders and his other Marvel books is probably the single biggest influence on today's Marvel writers, despite never being acknowledged. The Defenders featured Nighthawk- a realistic take on Batman minus the homoeroticism, Doctor Strange at the height of his bohemian lifestyle period (you could just weep for the shit they've put this character through in the last decade), Valkyrie (ditto), Hellcat (more modern and more interesting than any retconned "Jewel" or other such shit), and of course- The Hulk. Superb. The occasional extra fillip such as Submariner, Silver Surfer, and the antics of Power Man, Daredevil, Black Panther, Moon Knight, LMD Nick Fury- the book even after Gerber kept its powerful college kid doing drugs and pontificating feel.
Through all this DC was always like the polyester-suited standup comedian in one of those excruciating TV specials, but hey, you gotta have the bread as well as the turkey for a sandwich.
All it takes for the Silver Age to come back roaring into existence is for some of the first class indies to take off. And with sales figures in free fall for the brand managers, that could happen. The economics of monthlies means that the brand managers will always win that battle, but the war will be won in the graphic novel department. With even "hot!" "popular" "amazing" GNs selling 3000-10,000 copies, loads of indies can crack that market.
I disregard all claims of indie status for anything by anyone who takes coin from either Warner or Disney. With that sort of economic support, their "indie" projects are just hobbies. True indies are people outside that closed circuit of sympathy, doing it tough and truly independent. This is the same situation film was in, where real indies are up against "indie" "projects" by slumming Hollywood A-listers and producers desperate for the fata morgana of cinematic credibility.
Hit up IndyPlanet. Go through some of the lists. Feel that glorious Silver Age rush again. Walk amongst the crude, the sublime, the colorful to the point of distraction, the passionate to the point of embarassment. THAT is the Silver Age. And we are about to go into the Second Golden Age, the Great Fifty Years of Comics. I promise you that.
World War 3 and the generation of young warriors who fight it will help make this Great Fifty Years a true Golden Age- for all the same reasons as the first Golden Age, sadly enough.
Captain America might be part of it; Superman will lamely struggle on like the bastardised concept it is. Batman will unfortunately be part of it, at least at the beginning; but the Great Fifty Years will belong to the true indies.
Then in time they will become the new establishment, and the Toynbee cycles will continue...

There is, in fact, a text behind the film - The Invention of Morel, a novella written twenty-one years earlier by Adolfo Bioy Casares, Jorge Luis Borges' colleague of the Fantastic. The Argentinean masterpiece is about a fugitive, Morel, hiding out alone on a deserted island who one day awakens to discover that the island is miraculously filled with anachronistically dressed people "who dance, stroll up and down, and swim in the pool, as if this were a summer resort like Los Teques or Marienbad" (11). It turns out that Morel's invention is a diabolical holographic recording device that captures all of the senses in three dimensions. It is diabolical because it destroys its subject in the recording process, rotting the skin and flesh off of its bones, thus gruesomely confirming the native fear of being photographed and also, perhaps, warning of the dangers of art holding up a mirror to nature.

On a side note, I'd like to say that, while Comics Alliance does have a few writers who're okay and decent, for the most part, they're just not worth it, and are little different from Comic Book Resources, which is just as knee-jerk in their support for industry establishment, not to mention boilerplate leftist. So I really don't see much need to bother about them for the most part.-Avi Green
“This is the First Sign: We are told of the coming of the white-skinned men, like Pahana, but not living like Pahana men who took the land that was not theirs. And men who struck their enemies with thunder. (PD: Guns)
“This is the Second Sign: Our lands will see the coming of spinning wheels filled with voices. In his youth, my father saw this prophecy come true with his eyes — the white men bringing their families in wagons across the prairies.”
“This is the Third Sign: A strange beast like a buffalo but with great long horns, will overrun the land in large numbers. These White Feather saw with his eyes — the coming of the white men’s cattle.” (PD: Longhorn Cattle)
“This is the Fourth Sign: The land will be crossed by snakes of iron.” (Railroad tracks)
“This is the Fifth Sign: The land shall be criss-crossed by a giant spider’s web.” ( Telephone/Telegraph lines)
“This is the Sixth sign: The land shall be criss-crossed with rivers of stone that make pictures in the sun.” (Highways-Mirages)
“This is the Seventh Sign: You will hear of the sea turning black, and many living things dying because of it.” (Gulf Oil Spill)
“This is the Eight Sign: You will see many youth, who wear their hair long like my people, come and join the tribal nations, to learn their ways and wisdom. (Hippies?)
“And this is the Ninth and Last Sign: You will hear of a dwelling-place in the heavens, above the earth, that shall fall with a great crash. It will appear as a blue star. Very soon after this, the ceremonies of my people will cease. (Skylab?)
“These are the Signs that great destruction is coming. The world shall rock to and fro. The white man will battle against other people in other lands — with those who possessed the first light of wisdom. There will be many columns of smoke and fire such as White Feather has seen the white man make in the deserts not far from here. Only those which come will cause disease and a great dying.
Overall, the theme of Hopi prophecy is that the Earth is going to soon go through a great purification and that humanity can make the decision as to how extreme this purification will be. Their belief is that the world goes through a period of destruction and renewal and that we are about to enter into a new age, the 5th world (or 6th depending upon the source).” (Source)

But there is no shame in this.
This is the substance of the Way of the Samurai.
If by setting one's heart right every morning and evening, one is able to live as though his body were already dead, he gains freedom in the Way. His whole life will be without blame, and he will succeed in his calling.
