Investigation into fake pro-Labor posts - The West Australian

An investigation has been launched into the use of the parliamentary computer network to post pro-Labor messages online, using fake names.

The Department of Parliamentary Services investigation was sparked by a story in the Colac Herald last week.

The Victorian newspaper reported a computer user in Parliament House had pretended to be at least nine different people while making pro-Labor comments online.

The user posed as an employee of Bulla Dairy Foods, Colac Area Health and Barwon Health among other organisations.

Liberal senator Michael Ronaldson raised the issue during a Senate estimates hearing in Canberra on Monday.

The department's chief information officer Eija Seittenranta told the committee it would be a breach of Commonwealth law if a public servant was responsible for the postings.

She said the investigation underway should track down the computer used within a week, given the newspaper had provided the department with an internet protocol address.

However, it could take longer to identify who used the computer.

"We are in the preliminary stages of our response," Ms Seittenranta said.

Department boss Carol Mills told the hearing that if a public servant was found responsible it would be dealt with as a code of conduct issue.

However, if it was the staffer of a member or senator "we would have to look at that separately".
