We are us

Old Holborn

“We have been living beyond our means. We have been paying ourselves more than our efforts were earning. We sought political leaders who would assure us that the good times would never end and that the centuries of boom and bust were over; and we voted for those who offered that assurance.

We sought credit for which we had no security and we gave our business to the banks that advertised it. We wanted higher exam grades for our children and were rewarded with politicians prepared to supply them by lowering exam standards. We wanted free and better health care and demanded chancellors who paid for it without putting up our taxes.

We wanted salacious stories in our newspapers and bought the papers that broke the rules to provide them. And now we whimper and snarl at MPs, bankers and journalists. Fair enough, my friends, but, you know, we really are all in this together.”

EXCLUSIVE: PMs secret letter to media executives

We learnt in July that the prime minister was conducting secret negotiations with media executives on how much of our freedom to speak they would take away.

In response to reports on 24 July 2012 of a letter from the Prime Minister to Australia’s largest media executives the IPA made a freedom of information request for the letter on 30 July 2012.
We received an acknowledgement on 1 August 2012. That was followed up with correspondence on 24 August telling us that the letter we requested involved third parties. They needed more time.
On 17 September 2012 we were told that the letter was being transferred to another office. Again, they needed more time.

On 28 September 2012 the IPA’s executive director John Roskam published a column in the Australian Financial Review. The column made reference to our FOI request and a concern about shady deals between government and the media.

On the very same afternoon we received the prime minister’s letter as requested. Exclusively for readers of FreedomWatch, we have the letter here.

As you can see the letter is pretty bland. So why all the secrecy? The letter simply states the government’s well known and public position on the issue of media regulation. This is a perfect example of the kind of unnecessary and extensive secrecy that this government is obsessed with.

Empty Suit, Filled With Secrets

A Fantasy Election, an Imaginary Man by Andrew Klavan - City Journal

The active frauds—NBC’s dishonest editing of videos to reflect a leftist worldview, ABC’s allowing Democratic operative George Stephanopoulos to masquerade as a newsman, the Los Angeles Times’ suppressing even the transcript of the video in their possession that shows candidate Barack Obama at a meeting with a PLO-supporting sheik—these are only egregious salients of the more consistent, underlying dishonesty. The real steady-state corruption is revealed in the way Obama scandals like Fast and Furious, Benghazi-gate, and the repeated breaking of federal campaign laws have been wildly underplayed, while George W. Bush’s non-scandals, like the naming of Valerie Plame and the firings of several U.S. attorneys at the start of his second term, were blown out of all proportion. StumbleUpon

Fakebook: facebook adds false "likes", reaches 1 billion "users", some of them real.

BBC News - Facebook 'likes' automatically added without user-clicks

Facebook "likes" are being added to webpages even if a user has not clicked a like button, or even visited the page in question, the company has admitted.

'Like fraud'
The site explained that the figure represented how many times an item was shared - not how often users had clicked "like" on the page.

However, the number appears next to the word "like" and the site's distinctive thumbs up icon.

One expert told the BBC the findings were "disturbing".

"Something intended for one purpose is being used for something completely different," said Prof Alan Woodward from the University of Surrey.

"What else is being done automatically that we don't know about?"
