The Hopi Prophesies
by Ross Bishop

Some years ago I was privileged to stand before a sandstone petroglyph in Arizona that illustrates some of the prophecies given to the Hopi people many thousands of years ago. These prophecies have proven to be remarkably accurate. I am not Hopi, and do not wish to intrude into their traditions, but these teachings address matters that my people need to be aware of and concerned about, and so I offer them in that spirit. I wish to apologize for the length of this piece, but I consider this material to be extremely important for all of us.
The Hopi are ethnocentric, seeing themselves as guardians of the “true way.” From their Arizona mesas they look out upon a once pure world, soiled by the white man’s greed and corruption. And although they are deeply saddened by what has happened to the land they have loved and respected for thousands of years, they take solace in the fulfillment of prophesies given to them many millennia ago.
The Hopi prophesies predicted the coming of the white man and many of the events that have happened since. The prophecies also predict the white man’s destruction. And in this regard, the Hopi prophecies are not unlike the beliefs of the Aboriginals of Australia who hold that, “There are two roads, the Aboriginal road and the white man’s road. The white man’s road leads to destruction.” It might also be noted that these concerns are not far removed from the concerns of many Muslims today regarding the spiritual, moral and economic depravity they see in Western culture. The Hopi do not judge us, but many of them also choose not to join us in our headlong rush to The End of Days.
The Hopi have a very special relationship to the earth. The Hopi (and other pueblo tribes) build special sacred ceremonial places into the earth to honor that relationship. These special places are called Achivas (kivas). These are the places that Shaman go into the earth to do their most sacred work. According to Hopi legend, each time mankind has been destroyed at the end of a great age (the great flood of Noah, for example), the pure in heart have gone into the bosom of the Earth to live and be protected. The people are cared for there by a group of beings called 'The Ant People.' The people live deep inside the earth until “star visitors” then lead them to the surface.
The Hopi believe there will be nine worlds or ages: three previous worlds, the present Fourth World, the coming Fifth World, and two more future worlds: The Sixth, which is "The World of Prophecy and Revelation" and The Seventh Age, "The World of Completion." Beyond that, there is also the world of Taiowa, the Creator, and his nephew, Sotuknang. The end of each world has been signified by the appearance of “the blue star.”
The petroglyph in Arizona depicts the emergence of the people at (C), in this, the 4th creation. According to Hopi legend, when the people emerged from the underworld at Sipapuni (in what is now Arizona), they were met by Massau’u, the Great Spirit, the Caretaker of the land. He is the figure shown at (A) holding the “journey line.” Near His hand is a circle (D), representing the continuous Path of Life, the physical world and creation.
Massau’u told the people, "I am going to send you to the four directions and over time, I am going to change you to four colors, (black, yellow, red and white - the colors of Hopi corn). He made a set of sacred stone tablets, called Tiponi, into which He breathed His teachings, prophecies, and warnings. Each group received two tablets. These are called “The Original Teachings” and their similarity to Moses’ “Ten Commandments” tablets cannot be ignored, although the Hopi myth is considerably older.
The people then split into 4 clans (B). Not visible in the photograph, a sketch of the petroglyph (below) shows their migration in the 4 directions (represented by the sun sign on the left of the sketch). Each group eventually turned left, forming a reverse Swastika (which existed long before the Nazi’s appropriated it.)
Massau’u gave the Hopi and the other red people a path of life (E) to follow, and He assigned them the guardianship of the earth. They were to learn the teachings of the earth, the plants, the foods and the healing herbs; so that when all the people finally came together, they could share this knowledge.
Massau’u sent the yellow race to the South, and gave them the guardianship of the wind. They were to learn about the sky and breathing and how to take that within themselves for spiritual advancement. They were to share what they had learned with us all at the time of reconnection.
He gave the black race of people the West, and the guardianship of the water. They were to learn the teachings of the water, the chief of the elements, being both the most humble and the most powerful. (The similarity to Lao Tsu’s teachings about water in the Tao Te Ching, written much more recently - 670 B.C., is striking.)
Massau’u sent the white race of people to the North, and gave them the guardianship of fire. The white people have shown themselves to be very clever and gifted. They have invented many things. If you look at the things white people produce, you will find fire: cars and trucks, jet planes, rockets and missiles, power plants, factories, electronic devices, steel foundries, guns and bombs, etc.
After meeting with Massau’u, the white brother went on his way, and the Hopi went their way, according to their instructions. When the people finished their journeys to the four directions, they were to return, signifying the end of the Fourth (present) World and emergence into the next, Fifth World. But they were told that when they met again, that a white brother would come back to purify all, so that we would become one people again.
Point (E) on the petroglyph represents a time when the Great Chieftain of the Hopi Bow Clan fell into evil ways and left the true path. His two sons scolded him for his mistake, and after he died, they assumed the responsibilities of leadership. Each brother was given a set of Tiponi, and was instructed to carry them to a place to which the Great Spirit directed them. The elder brother (of the shining light) was told to go immediately to the east, toward the rising sun, and upon reaching his destination, to start back immediately to look for his younger brother, who remained on Turtle Island (North America). (The migration of white people from the Holy Land to North America was therefore foretold many millenia before it happened.) The younger brother was instructed to travel throughout North America and mark his footsteps as he went. Both brothers were told that a great white star would appear in the sky, and when that happened, all people would know that the elder brother had reached his destination. Thereupon all people were to settle wherever they were at that time, and to remain there until the elder brother returned.
In the petroglyph, there are two lifelines (K & G). The lower path (K) is the true path of everlasting life. K is the line of the one-hearted people who live in accordance with Massau’u’s teachings. Everlasting life is symbolized by a cane (oldage) with a branching corn leaf, shown at four points along this path (L).
The two-hearted people, who think with their heads rather than their hearts, are shown on path (G). The Prophecy Rock depicts three "two-heart" individuals (H), which the Hopi elders refer to as “wicked.” Older Hopi claim that heads have been added in modern times, for the elders remember when these figures had no heads. The absence of heads would represent the punishment or death that the wicked will suffer as a result of following a false path. To the Hopi the two-hearted path represents the journey of most white people.
The short line that returns to the straight path of life (N) connects the false path with an everlasting life symbol, showing that some people may return to the true path and to everlasting life. This is the last chance for people to turn back to the true way before the upper road disintegrates (the zigzag line) and terminates (I). Another "dead end" is shown by the symbol turning around or sagging down (J). The upper zigzag line has recently been scratched and marred to such an extent that is resembles a fourth figure, which the Hopi say was not there originally.
The small circle above the Path of Life (the final M), after the last chance, is the Great Purification, when the Great Spirit returns (O), holding an everlasting life symbol in his hand as he was shown at the beginning. For this reason he is called the first and the last. The square (F) is said to represent Oraibi, the ancestral home of the Hopi. The path (K to G) represents the false path of the wicked of Oraibi - the Hopi who hold themselves above others.
The Hopi shield in the far right (see sketch) symbolizes the Earth and the Four-Corners area of the Southwest where the Hopi live.
Symbol (P) is difficult to distinguish, because the panel has been damaged, and it looks more like three dots, but the Hopi claim it is a Catholic cross, added to the panel in modern times after a bad experience with Catholics in the seventeenth century, to show that the Hopi way and the Catholic way should not merge.
Thousands of years ago the Hopi were told that another race of people would come and claim Turtle Island as their own. They would try to change the Hopi way of life. The Hopi call these people Bahanna. The Bahanna would have a sweet or a forked tongue and would offer many good things by which The Hopi would be tempted. The Bahanna would use force in an attempt to trap the Hopi into using weapons, but the Hopi were warned about being seduced, lest they be brought to their knees, from which they might not be able to rise. The Hopi were forbidden to ever raise a hand against any nation.
One hot day in the summer of 1958, a minister named David Young stopped to offer a ride to an Indian elder, who accepted with a nod. After riding in silence for several minutes, the Indian said:
“I am White Feather, a Hopi of the ancient Bear Clan. In my long life I have traveled through this land, seeking out my brothers, and learning from them many things full of wisdom. I have followed the sacred paths of my people, who inhabit the forests and many lakes in the east, the land of ice and long nights in the north, and the places of holy altars of stone built many years ago by my brothers' fathers in the south. From all these I have heard the stories of the past, and the prophecies of the future. Today, many of the prophecies have turned to stories, and few are left - the past grows longer, and the future grows shorter.
“And now White Feather is dying. His sons have all joined his ancestors, and soon he too shall be with them. But there is no one left, no one to recite and pass on the ancient wisdom. My people have tired of the old ways - the great ceremonies that tell of our origins, of our emergence into the Fourth World, are almost all abandoned, forgotten, yet even this has been foretold. The time grows short.
“My people await Pahana, the lost White Brother, [from the stars] as do all our brothers in the land. He will not be like the white men we know now, who are cruel and greedy. We were told of their coming long ago. But still we await Pahana.
“He will bring with him the symbols, and the missing piece of that sacred tablet now kept by the elders, given to him when he left, that shall identify him as our True White Brother.
"The Fourth World shall end soon, and the Fifth World will begin. This the elders everywhere know. The Signs over many years have been fulfilled, and so few are left.
"This is the First Sign: We are told of the coming of the white-skinned men, like Pahana, but not living like Pahana, men who took the land that was not theirs. And men who struck their enemies with thunder. (Guns).
"This is the Second Sign: Our lands will see the coming of spinning wheels filled with voices. In his youth, my father saw this prophecy come true with his eyes. (The white people bringing their families in wagons across the prairies).
"This is the Third Sign: A strange beast like a buffalo but with great long horns, will overrun the land in large numbers. These White Feather saw with his eyes. (The coming of the white men's longhorned cattle.)
"This is the Fourth Sign: The land will be crossed by snakes of iron." (railroads).
"This is the Fifth Sign: The land shall be crisscrossed by a giant spider's web." (telephone & power lines).
"This is the Sixth sign: The land shall be crisscrossed with rivers of stone that make pictures in the sun." (freeways & road mirages).
"This is the Seventh Sign: You will hear of the sea turning black, and many living things dying because of it." (oil spills).
"This is the Eight Sign: You will see many youth, who wear their hair long like my people, come and join the tribal nations, to learn their ways and wisdom.
"And this is the Ninth and Last Sign: You will hear of a dwelling-place in the heavens, above the earth, that shall fall with a great crash. It will appear as a blue star. Very soon after this, the ceremonies of my people will cease.
"These are the Signs that great destruction is coming. The world shall rock to and fro. The white man will battle against other people in other lands -- with those who possessed the first light of wisdom (The Middle East). There will be many columns of smoke and fire such as White Feather has seen the white man make in the deserts not far from here. Only those which come will cause disease and a great dying.
“Many of my people, understanding the prophecies, shall be safe. Those who stay and live in the places of my people also shall be safe. Then there will be much to rebuild. And soon -- very soon afterward -- Pahana will return. He shall bring with him the dawn of the Fifth World. He shall plant the seeds of his wisdom in their hearts. Even now the seeds are being planted. These shall smooth the way to the Emergence into the Fifth World.
"But White Feather shall not see it. I am old and dying. You -- perhaps will see it. In time, in time..."
The old Indian fell silent. They had arrived at his destination, and Reverend Young stopped to let him out of the car. They never met again.
Massau’u told the Hopi that within the life of the current world, there would be three times when the world would be shaken. Three nations would rise up and shake it. Massau’u said that people would begin to build a black ribbon (highways). And on this black ribbon there would move a bug. He told them that when they saw this bug moving on the land (the automobile), that the First Shaking of the Earth was to come (WWI).
The shaking of the earth would be so violent that this bug would be eventually shaken off the earth and it would begin to move and fly in the air. By the end of the second shaking (WWII), the bug would be in the air all around the world. Behind it would be a trail of dirt and eventually the whole sky of the earth would become dirty from these trails of dirt. This would cause many diseases that would get more and more complicated. The two circles on the lower Path of Life on the petroglyph (M) are the first two "great shakings” of the earth.
Regarding the second circle or shaking, Massau’u spoke of a cobweb being built around the earth, and that people would talk across this cobweb (the telephone, radio). Massau’u told the people that the sun would then rise in the west and the sign of life would appear reversed and tilted in the east and that the Great Death would come upon the earth. This shaking would be worse than the first. (The sign of life reversed and tilted is the Swastika, and the rising sun in the west was the rising sun of Japan.) Massau’u spoke of a "gourd full of ashes" being invented, which, when dropped from the sky, would boil the oceans and burn the land, causing nothing to grow for many years (the atomic bomb).
Massau’u spoke of villages in the land so great that when you stood in the villages you would not be able to see out of them. In the prophecies these are called "villages of stone," or "prairies of stone.” He said the stone would grow up from the ground. At the center of each and every one of these villages will be people who would walk as "hollow" shells upon a "prairie of stone." Describing them as "hollow shells" means that these people would be spiritually empty. They would have lost their traditional understanding. They The Hopi call this imminent condition - and that of society today - "Koyaanisqatsi," - "world out of balance. . . a state of life that calls for another way." It was said that after an Eagle landed on the moon (the lunar lander of Apollo 11 was named the Eagle), some people would leave the prairies of stone and come home and take up some of the old ways and begin to make themselves reborn. But many others would not.
In the Prophecy, the elder brother (of the shining light) returns to find his younger brother. He will bring with him the Tiponi tablets (in another version, he looks for the tablets, in any case, to fulfill the mission given him by the Great Spirit. The Tiponi will be placed side by side to show the world that they are true brothers. The elder brother may have changed the color of his skin, but his hair would remain black. He will bring no religion but his own, and He would possess the ability to write the ancient language. He will be the only one able to read the Tiponi.
The True White Brother (Pahana) will bring with him two powerful helpers. In the prophecies, the two helpers are designated by the Hopi word for "population," as if they were large groups of people. One of the helpers will carry the sign of the swastika, a masculine symbol of purity, which is also the sign of the sun. The second great helper will have the sign of the Celtic cross with red lines (representing female life blood) between the arms of the cross.
The Celtic Cross
When the Great Purification is near, the helpers will shake the earth first for a short time in preparation then two times more. Then it will rest in order to rise a third time. Hopi prophecy foretells that the third event will be decisive. They see it as a war, a "spiritual conflict” with materialistic society.
The Prophecy says that signs of the third world shaking would be when:
1. Trees die. (Acid rain has taken a heavy toll on trees in some areas, but this could also refer to the demise of the rainforest).
2. Man builds a house in the sky (the international space station).
3. Cold places will become hot. Hot places will become cold. (global warming).
4. Lands will sink into the ocean and lands will rise out of the sea (global warming).
5. There will be an appearance of the Blue Star Kachina (more later).
The transformed elder brother, the True White Brother, will wear a red cloak or a red cap, similar to the pattern on the back of a horned toad (see photo). He will be all-powerful; none will be able to stand against him. He will come swiftly, and in one day gain control of the entire continent. The helpers will then be joined by the True White Brother, who will become one with them and along with his younger brother, bring "The Great Day of Purification."
The Prophesies final predictions are a mixture of Mother Nature’s revenge and an answer to the Red man’s prayers for retribution. The last circle on Prophecy Rock (the third M in the petroglyph), represents the third shaking of the Earth, the "final war" of purification in which all evil will be destroyed.
"The Great Day of Purification" is described as a "Mystery Egg" which will culminate either in rebirth or annihilation of the Hopi – The Hopi do not know which. It is said, "If he comes from the East, the destruction will not be so bad. But if he comes from the West, the “liberators” will drop from the sky like rain with great force. The Hopi people have been told not to be overly concerned because, "Those who are at peace in their hearts already are in the Great Shelter of Life. But they have also been warned: “Do not get up on your housetops to see because he will have no mercy. . . They will shake us by our ears, like children who have been bad. . . Our hair and our clothing will be scattered upon the earth.”
The Prophesies tell us that nature will speak with a mighty breath of wind. There will be earthquakes and floods causing great disasters, changes in the seasons and in the weather, disappearance of wildlife and famine. "Turtle Island could turn over two or three times and the oceans could join hands and meet the sky." This seems to be a prophecy of a "pole shift" - a flipping, of the planet on its axis.
The prophecies also speak of a social cleansing in which the pure in heart will eventually triumph over the evil and greedy: “All evildoers will be punished or destroyed. . . Blood will flow. . . There will be corruption and confusion among the leaders and the people all over the world. People in high places will be hunted. The hunting will gather strength and spread. War will come about like powerful winds. . . A final decisive battle between good and evil will take place.” The degree of violence will be determined by the degree of inequity between the peoples of the world and the balance of nature. In this crisis, rich and poor will be forced to struggle as equals in order to survive.
The prophecies say that the villages of stone will be there in the morning, and in the evening there would just be steam coming from the ground. In the center of the cities, the people will also have turned to steam because they did not wake up and leave.
Asked whether these people could be helped, the elders said, “Well, it's just that way. If a person does not have the spiritual eyes to see, it's very hard to show them. Or if they don't have the ears to hear, it's very hard to speak with them. We wish that we could go get them all but we can't. It's just that some are not going to wake up. Fortunately, some will.”
Afterwards, according to the Prophesies, real peace, brotherhood and everlasting life will be established. According to the prophecy, this time is not far off. The prophecies tell us, "When the Blue Star Kachina makes its appearance in the heavens, the Fifth World will emerge." This will be the Day of Purification. The Hopi name for the star Sirius (www.crystalinks.com/sirius.html) is Blue Star Kachina. It will be signified when the Saquasohuh (Blue Star) Kachina dances in the plaza and removes his mask before uninitiated children (the public). Then the time of the great trial will be here.
THE ALIEN CONNECTION
In another ancient rock carving near Mishongnovi, AZ, a dome-shaped saucer is depicted along with a maiden and other beings. This petroglyph has become an essential part of Hopi religious belief. Elders in the Hopi community perceive UFOs as having a direct connection with the old petroglyph and the foretelling of visitors from space who will arrive for the Day of Purification.
Chief Dan Katchongva said that the petroglyph shows a definite connection between the Indians and visitors from space. "We believe other planets are inhabited and that our prayers are heard there," he said. "The arrow on which the dome-shaped object rests, stands for travel through space. The Hopi maiden in the drawing represents purity.” He said that we believe those Hopi who survive Purification Day will travel to other planets.”
In a canyon near Santa Fe in 1993, seven prominent experts found ancient petroglyphs near the western edge of the Santa Fe National Forest, which clearly contained images of flying disks, aliens and other extra-terrestrial images. In addition, at other ruins in West Central Idaho, along the Snake River, the story of beings that came from the stars and a galactic war were recorded, according to Indian legend, over 30,000 years ago.
You may recall that the Hopi legends speak of Ant People, who care for the people when they live underneath the earth. Drawings of the Ant people look very much like modern day renditions of what UFO observers call “Grey aliens” with large heads, small stocky bodies and long spindly fingers, with 4, 5, or 6 digits. The drawings indicate telepathic thought waves coming from these beings.
The Anasazi were the ancestors of the Modern Hopi. On the left, in the drawing (below) are the major Anasazi cities located in the Four Corners Area of the American Southwest. On the right of the drawing, is a star chart of the Constellation Orion.
The Hopi are ethnocentric, seeing themselves as guardians of the “true way.” From their Arizona mesas they look out upon a once pure world, soiled by the white man’s greed and corruption.
The ancient Anasazi cities were sited to almost perfectly match the star positions in Orion. The traditional Hopi Three Mesas are aligned almost perfectly to Alnitak, Alnilam, and Mintaka, the major stars in Orion’s belt. Like much of its parent constellation, Orion's belt is a highly nebulous region of the sky.
When asked what people needed to do in order to become “one hearted,” the Hopi urge people to encourage rather than threaten life. They encourage people to insure that their actions benefit everyone rather than giving advantage to a few. They say, “Concern for all living things will far surpass personal concerns bringing greater happiness than could formerly be realized. Then all things shall enjoy lasting harmony. The basic premise is that humans cannot simply make their own laws and enforce them with weapons without regard to natural order. The very means of enforcement violates that order, causing precisely the suicidal situation now faced today.”
