Crack Emcee still owns but... Samuel L. Jackson Gets All Nick Fury on NYT Film Critic over Negative 'Avengers' Review - ComicsAlliance | Comic book culture, news, humor, commentary, and reviews

There are many reasons to love The Avengers movie, released today in US theaters: The quick-witted dialogue, the action scenes, the chance to see your favorite superheroes in action together on the big screen... One of the most unexpected, and more unusual reasons, however, seems to be "So that Samuel L. Jackson doesn't get mad at you."

(Over-)reacting to a review of the new superhero epic from New York Times critic A.O. Scott that said that the movie featured "overblown, skull-assaulting action sequences" and had failures that were "significant and dispiriting," with "grinding, hectic emptiness" and "bloated cynicism," Jackson took to Twitter with the following suggestion:
#Avengers fans, NY Times critic AO Scott needs a new job! Let's help him find one! One he can ACTUALLY do!
Scott seemed unmoved by the quasi-threat, saying that he was "more flattered than threatened" by the tweet, while Twitter en masse mobilized to pick sides in the conflict that started even quicker than Avengers vs. X-Men, complaining that Scott was being unfair to the movie and spoiling it in his review -- In his defense, he said "spoiling? come on. saying hulk hits thor is not spoiling anything" -- or that Jackson was in no position to complain about what was, ultimately, an indifferent review more than a negative one.

Jackson's reaction was an odd one. Overall, Marvel's The Avengers has been getting positive reviews, with the movie already on track to be a massive success internationally. Scott was already in the minority with his review, with Jackson's tweet just souring the success of the movie by making him seem unable to accept anything less than blind adoration and acceptance. Maybe he'll be calmed down by the $371 million the movie has earned worldwide already, even before today's US opening figures can be taken into account...
